  8.      The little boy's name is Calvin. Of course, he's only
  9. a comic strip character, and his best friend, Hobbs, is
  10. actually only a stuffed tiger who becomes very life-like 
  11. in Calvin's imagination. Its the only comic I read with
  12. regularity. I, for one, do not think that Bart Simpson 
  13. holds a candle to Calvin, in entertainment value; in wit; 
  14. or in educational value (yes, Calvin actually gives me
  15. some worthwhile things to think about).

  17.      Last week there was another Calvin strip that got me
  18. thinking. Calvin is hunched over an ant hill, talking to
  19. the ants. He says, "Hey ant, you're working like a maniac
  20. and what have you got to show for it?" In the next scene, 
  21. Calvin continues: "What's the colony done for you lately? 
  22. What about your needs?" Then Calvin throws up his arms and 
  23. exclaims, "You don't owe anybody anything! Let the others 
  24. fend for themselves! Move out! Discover yourself! Express
  25. your individuality!" In the final scene, Calvin 
  26. confidently places his hands on his hips, smiles in a
  27. self-satisfied way, and explains, "If they listen, this 
  28. will solve our ant problem."

  30.      Many today exemplify the attitudes Calvin was trying 
  31. to instill in the ants. Rugged independence, lack of
  32. consideration for others, and a "what's in it for me?" 
  33. attitude. Many of the heroes in films, TV and books are 
  34. those who break the rules and flaunt their "independence." 
  35. "I gotta be me!" It is not a good thing that interest in 
  36. the common good is trashed in favor of an obsessive
  37. interest in the individual. Frivolous lawsuits abound and
  38. people are rewarded huge sums for suffering the
  39. consequences of their own foolishness or crimes. Greed
  40. drives up costs for everybody, but that's O.K. as long as
  41. I get mine!
  42.  
  43.     And, of course, respect for God and His word do not 
  44. fit in very well with prevalent ideas of "doin' everything
  45. my way." No sir! Forget it! 
  46.  
  47.  
  48. Things are not better this way. Such selfishness 
  49. and greed are contemptible. They 
  50. deserve no place in the hearts of God's people! Such 
  51. attitudes are in complete opposition to what Jesus taught 
  52. concerning our relationships with God and man (Matthew
  53. 22:37-39). The church is a body with individual members
  54. working together for a common purpose. No one who lives by
  55. faith seeks independence from God, His Will or our
  56. responsibilities to one another as human beings.
  57.  
  58.       There was a time, during the early days of our
  59. nation, when a family of settlers would move into a locale
  60. that others would all join together and have a
  61. "house-raising." The house would go up quickly and
  62. everyone would enjoy themselves in a spirit of
  63. interdependence. Much of that has been lost on us, and we
  64. are not stronger for it, nor are we better off. Perhaps we
  65. need to re-evaluate our heroes. Maybe "Natural Born
  66. Killers" are not as deserving of hero status as so many
  67. evidently think they are.

  69.       Calvin was right... if the ants listen to him, the
  70. ant problem will soon be over.
